Wayne Beef & Ale, Wayne

December 8th, 2003

Conestoga Rd and W. Wayne Ave.
Wayne, PA
610.688.BEER

Rating: 3 silver spoons out of 5
Overview: Possibly the best dive bar in the area — great sandwiches and cheap beer.

Food: I’m going to say its the best hamburger on the Main Line — not because of its whopping size (18oz), but because it tastes so damn good. Can occasionally be overcooked, but if you order medium rare you should be fine. Lots of other good sandwiches to choose from as well — cheese steaks, roast beef and roast pork, etc. Bring your appetite. Takeout also available.
Ambiance: Small place, but somewhat bright and usually not too crowded (except for football games). The biggest drawback is the low ceilings which make the place extremely smoky, even when its not all that crowded. Avoid at all costs when there is a band (some Saturday nights), as the music is consistently loud enough to hear in the center of Wayne, ruining the normally laid-back atmosphere of “The Beef”.

Service: Actually, pretty good.

Value: Not haute cuisine by any means, but great value for what it is.

    HI EVERYONE THAT REMEMBERS ME!
I WORKED AT “THE BEEF” FOR 10+ YEARS. REALLY MISS THE HAND CARVED STEAM SHIP BEEF,FRISBEE OUT FRONT & THE OLD SMOKEY SNOWY DAYZ… MOST OF YOU NOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT.GETTING OLD F—ING SUCKS!

Cooz’s corner is a big step down from the beef and ale. I live right around the corner and used to be a regular. Now I am afraid to go in. The staff is rude, the food is not nearly as good as the old place. A shame indeed. This place will be out of biz in a few months

Now, the famed WBA chalkboard says it’s the soon-to-be home of the ‘new’ Cooz’s Corner….

Me and some friends hit up the WBA a few weeks ago after hearing a recommendation a few months back, and were, sadly, very disappointed. Service was absolutely horrid (we waited over an hour for our burgers, even though they weren’t busy at all, and the waitress refused to come check our table with any regularity, instead preferring to play pool in the back or flirt with people at the bar, refilling our drinks once during the entire sitting), and the food was only mediocre at best. The burgers were horribly over done, the bread was stale, and the food was lukewarm to cold, depending on who got their food first, as it came in waves every 15 minutes. I gotta say, I probably won’t be returning, and it takes alot to turn me off of a place forever.

And strangely enough, I never write bad reviews of things or places. In order for a something or somewhere to make me want to warn people against it publicly, it has to be really bad.

Yes, it is true, The Beef has been sold. I worked there for 7 years…many great memories and relationships formed. I am very happy to say, though, that if you enjoyed the good times, the food, and some of the staff…come see us at the Berwyn Tavern. Same great burgers, many familiar faces and many new great times to be had, 6 plasma TV’s…and lets not forget the deck and new outside dining area! Come on up and see us at the BT.

It appears that as of April 7, 2008, the Wayne Beef & Ale has closed.

I asked if the roast beef in the sandwich was rareand when told it was I oprdered it. I should have sent it back, after they drowned in watery gravy, it was gray meat!!. Eat a burger, They have to cook that top order. Buffalo wings were pretty good.

I don’t think there are many places like this anymore. I often walked to WBA when I lived in the neighborhood – often, but not a regular – and still didn’t need to order my beer – the bartender knows it before I sit down. The burger is the best.

I love the Wayne Beef & Ale. Their food is yummy and it’s a nice walk-to corner bar.
