Dining Under the Stars in Media

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

We happened to stumble across Media’s “Dining Under the Stars” event tonight — and boy were we late to the party. All summer, every Wednesday night, State Street was blocked off so restaurants all along the street could bring out tables and serve dinner al fresco. Tonight was the last night this summer, but we’ll remember next year…

Mims out at Carmine’s; Freehouse Closes, but Future Plans Await

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Gossip Alert!

This week, Philadelphia Magazine reported that longtime Carmine’s Creole Café chef/owner John Mims is no longer involved with the former Havertown / Narberth / now Bryn Mawr mainstay or his new Center City project Les Bons Temps. Mims says that “things aren’t exactly civil: ‘The lawyers are involved. It’s going to be a really ugly divorce.'”

Mims also says he has another project in the works, but is unable to talk about it yet. Thankfully, he’s been scooped by mainlinedine commenter Carol, who writes in that he’ll open up another Creole spot in place of Wayne’s Freehouse, which has closed for renovations.

UPDATE: Freehouse is open, Mims working in the kitchen, menu now creole-influenced.

Paoli’s Basil Closes

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

After 10 years, Paoli’s Basil Bistro has closed, according to a message on their answering machine. No details as to why — perhaps the opening of Maia has turned attention there.

Basil was never the star of the restaurant group that brings us Nectar, Tango and Maia (that is clearly Nectar), but it was certainly the most reasonably priced of the 4. For us, it was always kind of caught in the space between a neighborhood joint and a special night out, but we had several good meals there.

Our Favorite Thing – Cupcakes Gourmet in Frazer

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

We’re not sure what to make of the fact that gourmet cupcake bakers are popping up everywhere, but we’re sure happy they came to our neck of the woods. Frazer’s Cupcakes Gourmet offers a wide variety of traditional and trendy flavors, all of which are excellent. Our favorites so far are the chocolate with vanilla buttercream dipped in chocolate ganache and the chocolate chipotle (fridays only).

They aren’t cheap ($3.25 for a large, one-something for a mini), but keep in mind that these are hand-crafted treats, not mass-produced, supermarket junk. Stop by and check them out!
